Boot and Shoe Cottage

Wycliffe, Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 9TR

Cosy Country Cottage at an ancient river crossing
The historic Boot and Shoe Cottage, Wycliffe, once a cobbler's and a pub, now offers self catering accommodation sleeping up to 4 people. The cottage is situated on the banks of the river Tees, at an ancient crossing from Yorkshire into Durham.

The cottage offers a warm welcome with a roaring log burner, home-baking and country antique furnishings. Relax in the sitting room with its wood burning stove (logs provided), comfy sofas and views over the front garden and fields. The fully equipped kitchen / dining room has French windows opening on to the back garden, with steps down to the riverbank.

Enjoy your meals while watching the river Tees flow by - an ever changing view - with ducks, kingfishers, herons and the occasional otter. There is also a utility room with washer/dryer and a downstairs shower and loo. Upstairs there is a large double bedroom, and "attic" style twin ideal for children (with a well-stocked toy cupboard) and a bathroom. All bed linen and towels are provided.

Fishing is available on the river and there is a private tennis court.
Set in the heart of Teesdale, one of England's most beautiful and unspoilt areas, Boot and Shoe Cottage is 6 miles east of Barnard Castle and makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside. The area offers something for everyone - gentle walks from the front door or the rugged North Pennine AONB, historic castles and museums, villages with independent shops and cafes, bird-watching, sports and more.

Highlights are Barnard Castle, an historic market town with quirky shops, an antiques centre, weekly market and monthly farmers' market, and also home to the Bowes Museum housed in a magnificent c19th chateau with permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. "Up the dale" is High Force, England's largest waterfall. Raby Castle, the mediaeval home of Lord Barnard, and Auckland Castle, the home of the Prince Bishops, are close by as are Richmond and the Yorkshire dales. Further afield are Durham City, Hadrians Wall, the Lake District.
